How big is the European effervescent tablet market, and why use Germany as the reference?
No source reviewed here ranks European countries by effervescent supplement sales, so Germany as the reference market rests on what is visible. A BMJ Open survey bought 39 effervescent supplements in German shops in May–June 2022 and found 33 more preparations sold only in pharmacies. The authors add that sales through discounters, grocery stores and drugstores sit outside the available data.
Globally, a vendor report puts growth of the effervescent tablet market at US$7.97 billion over 2025–2029, a CAGR of 9.8%, across pharmaceuticals, supplements, dental care and other uses.
Why do pharmacies, drugstores and discounters all stock effervescent tablets?
The format is a dosed form: one tablet is one portion, and EU law names tablets among the dosed forms of a food supplement (Directive 2002/46/EC, Article 2). It appears in pharmacy-only products, and in drugstores and discounters as the retailer's own label. The sources give no single reason, so read this as observation.
For a launch brand this means the format is not tied to one channel. You choose the shelf first, then the formula and the story.
What does one effervescent tablet cost on the shelf (cents per portion)?
About three cents. A German discounter's own-brand magnesium tablet cost €0.55 for 17 in 2015, which is €0.032 each. An Austrian drugstore chain's own-brand magnesium tablet is listed at €0.65 for 20 today, a listed base price of €0.03 each (reported). Eleven years apart and across two retailers, the price per tablet is about the same.
The contrast is the point. A drink cube launched in the US at US$11 for 12, about US$0.92 per cube in 2021. Allowing for different years, currencies and products, that is on the order of 25 times the own-brand tablet. The gap reads as the price of a brand and a story, and it shows where a launch brand has room to set its price.
Tube, blister or sachet: which pack suits which format?
The format decides the pack, so the three are not substitutes. An effervescent tablet goes in a plastic tube with a desiccant cap; at FIZZPHARMA it is 20 tablets of 4 g per tube, 80 g of product. A drink cube sits sealed in its own blister with foil that carries your brand. A powder goes in a printed sachet of 4–12 g.
Price per pack is given in FIZZPHARMA's reply to your enquiry, once formula and pack are fixed.
Why does the moisture barrier matter more for effervescent than for plain tablets?
Because an effervescent tablet is built on an acid and a bicarbonate that react when wet. Moisture from the air starts that reaction early, so a bottle or a pouch does not suit the formula, and the pack is a plastic tube with a desiccant cap. A plain tablet has no such acid and bicarbonate pair.
The standard shelf life at FIZZPHARMA is 24 months, confirmed in the certificate of analysis (CoA) of each batch and set by the least stable ingredient.
Is an effervescent tablet a food supplement or a drink in the EU?
A tablet that is a concentrated source of nutrients, for example a vitamin or mineral dose, is a food supplement under Directive 2002/46/EC. The pack must be named "food supplement" and carry the recommended daily dose and the mandatory warnings. A flavoured tablet with no added nutrients is usually ordinary food under Regulation (EU) 1169/2011. Confirm the category with your legal adviser.
Two label rules come with the tablet. Health claims need an authorisation (Regulation 1924/2006). A tablet on a sorbitol base with more than 10% added polyols carries a polyol warning (Regulation 1169/2011, Annex III). FIZZPHARMA designs your label or checks yours, and your importer confirms the rules of the country of sale.
What is the minimum order for a private label effervescent line?
FIZZPHARMA counts the minimum in tubes and keeps it low, so a first launch can start small. The exact number is given in the reply to your enquiry, within 24 hours Monday to Friday. A repeat order carries the same minimum as the first.
More than 500 ready formulas are in production, with new ones added every month. A ready formula is available to other brands too; for a formula developed to your brief, the terms are set in our reply.
How long does it take to launch your own effervescent product?
Production takes from 4 weeks, on a ready formula and on your own. Transport and customs come on top. The order is fixed: enquiry, sample, sample approval, label artwork approval, production, printing and packing, delivery. Nothing is produced before you approve both the sample and the label. A change to the formula after approval means a new sample.
What this means for your brand
- Plain effervescent tablets sit at about three cents on the shelf. A brand that sells the same plain tablet at a premium competes with the discounter on its own ground.
- A brand wins with what a retailer's own label does not carry: a formula developed for you, a flavour, a pack that looks like yours, and a channel you choose, such as online.
- The tube makes this easy to start: 20 tablets of 4 g, a low minimum, production from 4 weeks.
FIZZPHARMA produces effervescent tablets in tubes under your brand in the European Union, and the same site makes drink cubes in blisters and powder sachets. FIZZPHARMA develops a sample from your brief; you approve it and the label. Send your brief through the contact page.
FAQ
What is a private label effervescent tablet?
It is an effervescent tablet made by a contract manufacturer and sold under your brand. At FIZZPHARMA the tablet weighs 4 g, comes 20 to a tube, and is pressed on a sorbitol base. You can choose a ready formula or have a formula developed for your brand.
Which ready formulas can I launch with?
FIZZPHARMA lists Vitamin C 1000 mg, Vitamin C + Zinc, Multivitamins, Magnesium + vitamin B6, and Calcium + Vitamin D3 among its ready effervescent formulas. The plant's list holds more than 500 ready-made formulas in production. The names carry no promises.
What happens with a formula developed for my brand?
A formula can be developed to your brief, with the terms set in our reply. FIZZPHARMA makes a sample from your brief, you approve the sample and the label, and only then is anything produced. A ready formula is available to other brands as well.
Who prints the tube and designs the label?
The factory. FIZZPHARMA prints the tube at the production site and either designs your label or checks the one you bring.
What documents come with each batch?
Each batch comes with a CoA and a specification. FIZZPHARMA is ISO 22000, GMP and HACCP certified, and copies of the certificates with their numbers are sent to clients on request. Export papers include a Certificate of Free Sale and a Certificate of Manufacture.
Does FIZZPHARMA ship outside the EU?
Yes. FIZZPHARMA delivers worldwide, EXW by default, with FCA or DAP on request. Under DAP the goods are delivered to your address and duties are paid by you. Registration of the product in the country of sale is filed by your importer with FIZZPHARMA's documents.
