What is a table-top sweetener?
A table-top sweetener is a preparation of permitted sweeteners, which may also contain other food additives or food ingredients, intended for sale to the final consumer as a substitute for sugars. That is the definition in Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008, and a tablet, a cube, drops or a powder that is sold this way falls under it.
The word "table-top" matters for the label, because it fixes the sales name and brings the warnings of Article 23 into play.
What must the label of a table-top sweetener sold in the EU include?
The sales name must include the term "[sweetener]-based table-top sweetener", naming the sweetener. A sweetener with polyols also carries "excessive consumption may induce laxative effects", and one with aspartame or aspartame-acesulfame salt carries "contains a source of phenylalanine". The producer must also supply the information needed for safe use, by appropriate means.
| Label element | What the rule says | Applies when | Where |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sales name | Includes the term "…-based table-top sweetener", naming the sweetener | Always | Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008, Article 23(2) |
| Polyol warning | "excessive consumption may induce laxative effects" | The sweetener contains polyols | Article 23(3) |
| Aspartame warning | "contains a source of phenylalanine" | The sweetener contains aspartame or aspartame-acesulfame salt | Article 23(3) |
| Safe-use information | The producer provides what the buyer needs for safe use, by appropriate means | Always | Article 23(4) |
FIZZPHARMA designs your label or checks the one you bring, and label artwork is prepared with you and approved before printing. Your importer confirms the label rules of the country of sale, and the artwork follows them. The print-size rules for a small face (Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011) and the claim rules are collected in sweetener tablets private label: EU labelling, dispensers and sugar taxes.
Does a sweetener tablet need a polyol or aspartame warning?
It depends on the ingredient list, not on the shape of the product. A tablet, cube, drops or powder that contains polyols carries the laxative line, and one with aspartame or aspartame-acesulfame salt carries the phenylalanine line. A sweetener with neither carries neither.
This is why the sweetener is the first item in the brief: it picks the warning, and the warning sets how much of a small face is left for your brand. Send FIZZPHARMA the sweetener you have in mind with the first message.
Can a sweetener be pressed as a mini-tablet?
Mini-tablets are among the tablet types of the IMA PREXIMA 300 press (IMA Active), which takes tablets up to 25 mm in diameter. The weight of a sweetener mini-tablet, the dose and the pack are confirmed in our reply to your brief.
Mini-tablets in a dispenser, cubes, drops, powder or sachet: which format fits?
The way your customer doses the sweetener decides: one tablet at a time from a dispenser, one cube, by the drop, or by the spoon or the sachet. Each is taken as a brief on request, and the format, the dose and the pack are confirmed in our reply.
| Format | How FIZZPHARMA takes it | What you tell us |
|---|---|---|
| Mini-tablets in a dispenser | On request, confirmed in our reply | The sweetener, the dose per tablet, the pack you have in mind |
| Pressed cube | On request, confirmed in our reply | The sweetener, the dose per cube, the pack |
| Drops | On request, confirmed in our reply | The sweetener, the dose per serving, the pack |
| Powder or sachet | On request, confirmed in our reply | The sweetener, the serving, the pack |
The pack decides the label area, and the label area decides how much of the legal text and the brand fit, so settle the pack before the artwork. Other products in sachets and cubes are described on powder sachets under your brand and drink cubes.
What is the minimum order for table-top sweeteners?
The minimum is given in our reply to your enquiry, which comes within 24 hours, Monday to Friday, and a repeat order has the same minimum as the first. The unit of the minimum follows the format you choose.
Other products count in their own units: tubes for effervescent tablets, cubes and boxes for drink cubes, kilograms for sachets and powders. All of them are compared on minimum order and lead time.
How long does a sweetener order take?
The production time is given in our reply, and transport and customs come on top. Before production come the enquiry, the sample and your two approvals, first the sample and then the label artwork. Nothing is produced before you have approved both, and a change to the formula after approval means a new sample.
To keep the calendar short, send the sweetener, the format, the pack and the country of sale with the first message. The order of steps is on how a private label order works.
Who designs the label?
FIZZPHARMA designs your label or checks the one you bring. Label artwork is prepared with you and approved before printing. Your importer confirms the label rules of the country of sale, and the artwork follows them.
Your own packaging can be used on request: send its specification with your enquiry, and it is checked for suitability for the line.
What your choice decides
Each choice fixes part of the order. The table shows what it costs you in time or risk, not in money.
| Your choice | What changes | What it costs you |
|---|---|---|
| The sweetener | It picks the warning on the pack: polyols bring the laxative line, aspartame the phenylalanine line | Space: the warning shares a small face with your brand |
| Format: tablets, cube, drops, powder or sachet | It sets the pack and the unit of the minimum | Time: the format, the dose and the pack are confirmed in our reply before anything else |
| Label artwork designed with FIZZPHARMA, or your own | FIZZPHARMA designs the label or works from the artwork you bring, and the artwork is approved before printing | Time: one approval round before print. Risk: text that does not match the rules of the country of sale means new artwork |
| Your own packaging | Its specification is checked for suitability for the line | Time: a suitability check before production |

What must the name of a table-top sweetener include?
The sales name must include the term "[sweetener]-based table-top sweetener", naming the sweetener, under Article 23 of Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008. FIZZPHARMA asks for the sweetener first, because the name follows from it.
Does a polyol sweetener need a warning?
Yes. A table-top sweetener with polyols carries "excessive consumption may induce laxative effects", and one with aspartame or aspartame-acesulfame salt carries "contains a source of phenylalanine". Which line applies follows from the ingredient list, so FIZZPHARMA asks for the sweetener in the first message.

Can I use my own packaging?

The published sugar levies state their rates for drinks. For a sweetener tablet or powder, FIZZPHARMA advises asking your importer for its tax and customs classification in writing. The detail is in sugar taxes on drinks in the Gulf and Africa.
Which documents come with a batch?
FIZZPHARMA sends a CoA and a specification with each batch of your product, after laboratory control. Your importer files the registration in the country of sale with these documents and the plant certificates. Details: certificates and CoA.
