Industry analysts value the global water enhancer category at about US$3.5 billion in 2025 and forecast US$7.5 billion by 2034, growing 8.8% a year (IMARC). Liquid concentrates are still the largest form, while powders are the form analysts describe as gaining. In the US, powdered water mixes alone reached about US$1.5 billion, up 20% in 2024 (CNN, citing Circana).
In the EU, a sweetener tablet sold to shoppers is a table-top sweetener under Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008. Article 23 fixes the sales name as "[name of sweetener]-based table-top sweetener" and adds warnings for polyols and aspartame. At least 116 countries now tax sugary drinks (WHO, January 2026), so sugar has become a cost line for buyers well beyond the sweetener shelf.
From 1 January 2026 Saudi Arabia taxes sweetened drinks by the sugar in 100 ml of the ready drink, replacing a flat 50% of retail price: zero below 5 g, SAR 0.79 per litre at 5–7.99 g, SAR 1.09 from 8 g. Drinks sweetened only with artificial sweeteners sit at zero. The UAE adopted the same tiers.
An own-brand effervescent tablet costs about three cents at a German discounter or an Austrian drugstore chain: €0.55 for 17 tablets in a 2015 test, €0.65 for 20 in a current online listing (reported). No source reviewed here ranks European countries by sales, but Germany is where the format is easiest to see, from the pharmacy shelf to the discounter.
Pick the format by serving weight, first-order size and lead time. At FIZZPHARMA, a sachet (4–12 g, from 300 kg of blend, production from 4 weeks) is the single-serve powder route to a first electrolyte line; the effervescent tablet in a tube (20 tablets of 4 g, low minimum, from 4 weeks) and the drink cube are the effervescent formats, agreed per project.
An effervescent cube or tablet is a food supplement under Directive 2002/46/EC when it is a concentrated source of nutrients in dose form, and usually an ordinary food under Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011 when it only flavours water. The category sets the pack name, mandatory phrases and claims. The minimum x-height of printed text is 0.9 mm on packs whose largest surface is under 80 cm².
A retailer listing for a drink-cube brand puts 12 cubes at 24 g, or 2 g per cube. Twelve ready-made 500 ml servings hold about 6 kg of water before bottle, cap and carton, roughly 250 times the weight. For an online drinks brand, that ratio sets freight, storage space and returns.
